3 Ways to Take Care of Yourself After a Treatment
Proper aftercare can help you maximize the effects of acupuncture treatment. After your session, keep these three tips in mind.
Take a Nap
Acupuncture treatments tend to make you feel a little sleepy. If you will be going home after treatment, make time for a nap. Naps help your body adjust to the changes brought about by the treatment.
Stay Away From Unhealthy Foods and Beverages
Sugar, alcohol, and processed foods should be avoided after your treatment. These foods and beverages can undo some of the positive effects of your treatment. If you feel hungry after treatment, reach for a healthy snack instead.
Avoid Strenuous Workouts
Schedule your treatment after you have already exercised for the day. Strenuous activity can affect the progress made during your session. Avoiding mentally strenuous activities is just as important. If you work in a highly stressful job, going back to work after a session will not give your body the time it needs to adjust and adapt.
Acupuncture offers a natural way to treat arthritis, migraines, asthma, acid reflux, high blood pressure, and other common diseases and conditions. Your sessions are much more likely to be productive if you are fully committed to the experience. These tips will help you ensure that you get the most benefit from your treatments.
Do a Little Homework Before Your First Visit
Acupuncture practitioners do not just focus on a set of complaints, but consider the whole person when designing treatment plans. Your practitioner will ask questions about your job, lifestyle, and medical history during your consultation. Before you visit, make a list of any medications you take, and note illnesses and injuries, along with dates and outcomes. Sharing information about your medications is important, as some herbal treatments used in acupuncture can interact with prescription medications.
List your symptoms in detail and note when they occur, what triggers them and how long you have experienced them. A quick look at your list will refresh your memory if you should happen to forget a few symptoms during your consultation,
Watch What You Eat and Drink
Eat lightly before your visit. You will be more comfortable if you avoid eating a large meal just before you arrive. If your stomach is busy digesting food during your session, some of your energy will be diverted to your abdominal area, which can affect your treatment. It's also a good idea to avoid foods and beverages that contain caffeine, alcohol, or sugar before treatment. These substances can affect the way you perceive sensations.
Patients sometimes take painkillers before appointments in anticipation of the pain that they are sure will occur during treatments. Since acupuncture needles are so thin, many people feel nothing or only experience a momentary pinch when the needles are inserted. As Qi, the life force that travels throughout your body, begins to flow freely, you may notice tingling, warmth or subtle movements. Because acupuncture tends to be more effective when you can feel Qi, it's best to avoid pain killers.
Wear Comfortable Clothing
It's important to relax during treatments, but that can be hard to do if you wear tight or restrictive clothing. Choose loose, comfortable clothing that can be easily moved aside to allow for the insertion of acupuncture needles.
Keep Your Appointments
Although you may begin to feel better after just one treatment, most people benefit from regular acupuncture sessions. Your acupuncture practitioner will develop your treatment schedule based on the severity of your symptoms. Keeping your appointments will ensure that you continue to make progress and do not experience setbacks.
Follow Your Practitioner's Advice
Although the insertion of needles in your body is a key part of acupuncture treatments, your practitioner may also recommend that you take herbal remedies to enhance healing, make changes to your diet and begin an exercise program. Making lifestyle changes is not always easy, but you may find that you begin to feel better faster if you follow your practitioner's advice.
